INTRODUCTION

This multi-volume series tells the story of bands who are exploring both the possibilities and the limitations of heavy music approached purely as an instrumental medium. That is to say, without a singer.

It's hardly a novelty these days, either. If nothing else, Doomed & Stoned: The Instrumentalist has helped us to understand the depth and breadth of this burgeoning subgenre. As with their traditional rock and metal counterparts, you'll find ample experimentation. This volume, especially, presents an array of heavy psychedelic, post-metal, and doom blends.

The array is cosmopolitan, this time yielding discoveries from Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway Portugal, and Russia -- with Italy emerging as the most sampled hotbed of instrumental excellence for this particular compilation.

In the USA, we have prime examples of excellence hailing from Chicago and Eugene, Oregon -- one of the favorite stops of the Grateful Dead back in the day and current home of Yob and local favorite Psyrup (and yes, there you can still find real, live hippies here).

As we bring this series to a close, my immense gratitude is extended once again to Rob Hammer who assisted in corralling a world's worth of bands, and to his mother for kindly contributing paintings from her personal collection to serve as our album art.
